 The .30 carbine cartridge (7.62 × 33 mm) was developed by Winchester, who made it by modifying the .32WSL cartridge from 1906.

It appeared for the first time in 1940 and was born as ammunition for the "M1 Carbine", a light weapon designed for soldiers in special assignments and used by the US army both during the Second World War and during the Vietnam War.
